Do I have to have a master's degree to be admitted? No. Students with bachelors and master's degrees have been admitted to the BAR Lab.
What qualities make for a successful student in the lab? Successful students tend to be hard working, conscientious, flexible committed to learning and able to accept feedback.
What are the relationships like among students in the lab? It is the expectation that students working in the lab are collaborative and good team players that support each other's work. Things like competitiveness or other disruptive behaviors are not accepted and likely result in dismissal from the lab.
How often does the lab meet? The lab meets weekly as a group during the academic term. During a students first year they will schedule a weekly individual meeting time with Dr. Madson to use as needed.
How do students stay on track with their research? The lab is structured with the goal of students defending their dissertation PRIOR to beginning the predoctoral internship. Through reviewing the lab outline you will notice that the use of weekly meetings, weekly research goals and accountability to the lab help to support this structure and goal.
What do students research for their thesis/dissertations? Students in the lab research social-cognitive and mental health predictors of safe and harmful substance use. Examples of projects include the degree to which post-traumatic stress attenuates the relationship protective strategies have with harmful alcohol use and alcohol-related negative consequences, marijuana use strengthens or weakens the relationship protective strategies have with alcohol-related negative consequences.
Can I do motivational interviewing research? Not for your thesis/dissertation. However, interested students can be involved in my MI projects based on career goals and progress on thesis/dissertation.
Can I be involved in research outside of my thesis/dissertation? YES! As a scientist-practitioner in training it would be very valuable for you to engage in additional research.
